V2X Communication Road Test

Safe and comfortable driving will increasingly rely on vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. These communicate wirelessly with equipment in nearby vehicles and roadside infrastructure and provide information on, for example, vehicles approaching from outside the field of vision and traffic signal lighting at intersections.

Sumitomo Electric has commercialized servers for road traffic control systems that, for example, control traffic signals as well as for cellular communication systems, thus helping to spread the basic technology for connected vehicles. Inside vehicles, the Company has developed in-vehicle communication and wiring harness technologies that transmit signals, and conducts research and development of in-vehicle wireless radio equipment in order to achieve highly functional in-vehicle and roadside infrastructure systems by integrating communications inside and outside vehicles.  We have been testing the technologies at our Yokohama testbed in Japan as well as Mcity and GoMentum Station in the U.S.

5G Real-time Traffic Monitoring

OSAKA JAPAN, November 10, 2017– Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that since September 19 they have been jointly testing the real-time collection and delivery of traffic information using high-definition sensors connected via a fifth-generation (5G) mobile communications system for advanced driving support.

The system networks sensors that have been mounted on vehicles and installed along roadsides or in buildings to collect traffic information that is analyzed in real time and then fed back to drivers and pedestrians. The results of the test were presented at an event, Mietekita Chotto Saki no Mirai (A Peek into the Near Future), held at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in November 2017.
